A 22-year old’s post about the dangers of the Mirena intrauterine device (IUD) on Facebook has gone viral, being shared more than 1 million times. Samantha Yoakum shared her story of Mirena side effects and received over 70,000 messages and comments of support and similar stories.
Yoakum received a Mirena device 6 weeks after giving birth at the urging of her doctor, but soon started showing signs of severe side effects, including intense pain and hair loss. The doctor discovered that the device migrated to Yoakum’s myometrium and would have to be surgically removed. The Mirena IUD was so deeply embedded that it required multiple surgeries to attempt to remove the device.
Device manufacturer Bayer faces thousands of Mirena lawsuits alleging that the device perforated the uterus and traveled to other parts of the body. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has reportedly received more than 70,000 Mirena complaints alleging side effects from the birth control device, including internal bleeding and tissue damage.
