Doctor explains why he would not recommend IUD for teenagers

November 21st, 2014

Popular news contributor Doctor Manny Alvarez has spoken out against the intrauterine device (IUD) as a means of birth control for teenagers, citing side effects as a cause for concern. The Mirena IUD, the top-selling IUD in the U.S., has been the subject of tens of thousands of complaints from women who allege the device is causing serious complications.

Some serious Mirena side effects cited by Doctor Alvarez include a serious infection known as pelvic inflammatory disease, which could cause infertility, and uterine perforation, which could require surgery. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received more than 70,000 Mirena side effects complaints documenting similar concerns.

The Mirena IUD is used by more than 2 million women throughout the U.S. Mirena manufacturer Bayer Pharmaceuticals is facing multiple Mirena lawsuits alleging that the device caused severe complications. In 2010, the FDA issued a warning to Bayer for misleading advertising, in which Bayer downplayed the risks associated with the Mirena IUD.
