A Calgary woman on trial for the murder of two infants and attempted murder of a third is on bail on the condition that she wear an intrauterine device (IUD) such as the Mirena IUD. Meredith Borowiec allegedly gave birth to all three victims over three years and placed their live bodies in a dumpster.
The Canadian court ordered the IUD as a condition of Borowiec’s bail so that she may not attempt to give birth to another child. The decision could be problematic, as several IUDs including Mirena have been found to fail and cause severe side effects in patients.
Tens of thousands of women have complained of Mirena IUD side effects to the Food and Drug Administration. Complications include severe pain, organ perforation due to device migration and ectopic pregnancy, a condition in which an unsustainable fetus develops outside of the uterus.
