In a popular blog post, patient Alice Myerhoff has given a first-hand account of her experience contracting sepsis, or toxic shock, from an intrauterine device (IUD). IUD contraceptives such as Mirena have become increasingly scrutinized for their potential side effects.
Myerhoff recounts feeling increasingly sick and developing spots along her leg a few days after receiving the IUD, and right before being rushed to the hospital. Doctors eventually agreed that the IUD was responsible for Myerhoff developing toxic shock, which has a mortality rate as high as 50%.
Mirena’s manufacturer Bayer Pharmaceuticals is facing several Mirena lawsuits alleging that the device causes severe complications. Mirena side effects include tissue damage, IUD migration and ectopic pregnancy, a fatal condition in which a fetus develops outside of the uterus.
